so, in reality SS is probably a much better program, but you have to stay disciplined on the diet if you are an easy gainer. that being said it is all about diet and if I could get my act together and track macros like Jordan recommends (very very similar to what Mike recommends), then I'd be fine. But I looked better and felt better on BLS. and probably would have gotten me even stronger if I did from the start. And I am thankful to him/his work for introducing me to Starting Strength. It worked, but I was careless with food choices and am now paying the price in trying to lean out. so not surprising when I found something that said EAT to get was a great excuse for me. to be fair to starting strength.I'm an eater.

Here I am 11 months later and I am much stronger, but also much flabbier. Mike Matthews highly recommended Starting Strength, so I picked it up to learn the lifts and then got hooked. I looked much leaner, and did get decent improvement in the big 4 lifts, I also felt very fit (i.e., well conditioned.more energy). I lost about 40 pounds (some of that was lost prior to starting with shit tons of cardio).

I did the first 4 months of the BLS workout and followed the diet fairly closely. SB - For what its worth, I came through a similar path.

Feel free to message me with any questions on it. I'm brand new to this forum and plan to start SS next week, but I figured I would post on this topic and put this out there as someone who's actually done the BLS program from start to finish. On the other hand, I'm grateful that BLS gave me an appreciation for the core lifts and that I spent most of my time at the gym over at the squat rack with a barbell in my hands. Currently, I am buying into the idea that I was wasting a lot of energy on the accessory work when I should have just been doing the core lifts. BLS almost strikes me more as an intermediate program now that I know a bit more. It's clearly a better program for a beginner, which I was, and I think I could have made faster gains for a longer period of time on it.

In retrospect, I wish I had done SS first. I can't help but wonder if I could have made more gains if I had eaten more. Unfortunately, I spent roughly 8 of the 12 months on a cut eating between 1700-1850 calories and only about 4 months on a bulk eating around 2700 calories once the reverse diet peaked. I also gained the discipline to track what I eat in MyFitnessPal. I did get stronger - working sets of bench press + 50lbs, military press +15lbs, back squat +75lbs, and deadlifts +110lbs. I've since sold most of the equipment and all I have left is basically a squat rack with pull-up bar.Īnyway, BLS is the first book and program that really resonated with me and that I really stuck with and saw results. None of these brought any results except weight loss and the latter just left me feeling run down and detrimentally affected my health. In my 30's, I built myself a garage box and had a six-month affair with Crossfit mainsite. I had brief jaunts in my 20's with magazine workouts, Body for Life, and a round of P90X (never again). Thou doth protest too much? Personally, I doubt it. I do not believe that he is on steroids, and he speaks out against them regularly. Bumping a very old thread for my first post, but I just completed Mike Matthews year-long "Bigger, Leaner, Stronger."
